Direct Access is designed to streamline care, reduce delays in treatment, and improve patient outcomes by enabling individuals to see a physical therapist as soon as possible.

Insurance
Direct Access is covered by a range of insurance providers, including Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and many private insurers, though insurance plans can change over time. Medicare also covers Direct Access as long as the physical therapist develops a plan of care for the patient. It is important to note that the therapist must have the plan reviewed and approved by a qualified doctor before treatment begins.
Did You Know?
While it’s often associated with outpatient physical therapy, its applications extend well beyond. In fact, Direct Access is becoming increasingly common in school districts, sporting events, pediatric facilities, private home health care and hospitals – offering patients more flexibility and timely care.
A common misconception about Direct Access is that it’s not available everywhere, but that’s far from the case. While the scope of Direct Access does vary from state to state, it is available in some form in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Though laws and regulations vary, the general trend is toward greater access and fewer restrictions. Over the years, more states have relaxed their laws to make it easier for patients to access physical therapy services directly, with many states continuing to update and expand regulations.
